Blowing Rock is one of the premier second-home communities in the state. It’s also a small resort town with expensive land and limited storage. If you own a second home in Blowing Rock and you have an RV, boat, or seasonal recreational vehicles, storing them off-mountain in Lenoir at Northstar Self Storage costs a fraction of on-mountain rates and is 20 minutes down US-321.
Storage is a real-estate business. Blowing Rock land is expensive because the town is desirable and inventory is tight. Lenoir land is much cheaper. That difference passes straight through to storage rates. For a covered or outdoor RV spot, the difference between Blowing Rock and Lenoir can be 50-100% per month — real money over a year.
The drive from downtown Blowing Rock to Northstar at 636 Nuway Circle is 20 minutes, mostly on US-321 South. It’s not a difficult drive — no cliff-hugging mountain roads once you get past the initial descent. You can leave your mountain home in the morning, pull your RV, be at a Parkway campground by afternoon, and drop the RV back at Northstar Sunday evening.
Nothing wrong with on-mountain storage — sometimes convenience wins. If you use your RV every weekend and don’t want a 20-minute drive to get to it, pay the premium for on-mountain. But if you use it 6-12 times a year, off-mountain saves you enough to fund most of your other expenses associated with the mountain house. Do the math once and you’ll see.
Northstar handles outdoor parking and drive-up units. For fine art, antiques, wine collections, and other climate-sensitive items that Blowing Rock owners might want in stored somewhere protected but not on the mountain, our sister facility Five Star Self Storage in Lenoir handles climate-controlled. Same locally-owned operator, five-minute drive between the two facilities.
